Dutch broccoli

Broccoli contains relatively many vitamins (A, B, C, and K), folic acid, and minerals like iron, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. In addition to these healthy features, broccoli is a versatile vegetable in the kitchen. In contrast to Dutch cauliflower, Dutch cabbage has a spicier flavour and finer structure.

Availability

Dutch broccoli is available from May until November.

Distribution

The broccoli finds its way to the consumer through the market channel or via supermarket chains in Europe.

Assortment

Broccoli is pre-packaged available in the following assortments:

  • Broccoli (sealed);
    • 12, 15, 20 pieces  in carton;
    • 12, 15, 20 pieces EPS-M;
    • Other assortment, upon customer specification;
  • Broccoli (naked);
    • 6 kg unsorted EPS-M;
    • 6 kg unsorted carton;
    • Other assortment, upon customer specification;
  • Broccoli on ice;
    • 8 kg tempex box.

Cultivation

The planting schedule runs from March until April. The first weeks after the broccoli plants are planted are crucial for their rooting. Subsequently, the plants grow into a mature broccoli, ready for harvesting.

Harvest

The first Dutch broccolis are harvested in June. Harvesting happens manually, by cutting the good Broccoli plants. The cut broccoli is stored in a special box.

Storage

The full harvesting carts are driven to the modern cooled storage straight after harvesting. In the cooled storage an automatic process follows, which cools the iceberg lettuce back down to 3 degrees Celsius using a vacuum cooler. Once the iceberg lettuce has reached the right temperature, it is ready for direct delivery to customers.
